This film was based on a book by Neil Gaiman. I’ve heard his name for a long time now, but I never really bothered to read any of his books. But after watching this film, I’m now itching to get my hands on his books. Now if only I had the money to buy it, seeing that the Artemis Fowl series is still on my to-buy list. Maybe someone would like to give me one as a birthday gift? Hmm…

I was amused with the special effects that they made in this film. Especially the fight scenes of the witches, they’re just… WOW. This probably beats the special effects that they did in the Harry Potter movies. I especially likes the flying ship and the way the witches cast their spells. Although I have to admit, I think they over-dramatized the final fight scene between the witch, Yvaine and Tristan. As Mardan said, they should have just stayed near the door where they wouldn’t be hit with the shattering glass. But they just had to run in the direction where there are more glass panes to shatter. For dramatic effect, haha. And come on, to defeat the witch, all that Yvaine did was to SHINE?! That’s it? Come on, spare me the cheese…

The cast was really good. I almost believed the part when the witch released them, haha. But my all-time favorite character is Captain Shakespeare. You can probably guess why. It was really entertaining watching him teach Tristan how to fight, while teaching Yvaine to play the piano and to dance the waltz. Hell, he even fixed Tristan and Yvaine’s look, haha. And it was really a winning moment when Septimus discovered his true personality. And one of the pirates delivered this winning line:

We always knew you were a whoopsie…

But still, their loyalty is admirable. Har!

For the plot, I think Joyce said it best: It was really corny, but the special effects and the soundtrack saved it. Don’t get me started on the plot, I wasn’t in the mood to watch cheesy movies last night. And that movie spells cheese overload. Want to know why? Here are some of the lines from the film.

Yvaine: Are you tempted?
Tristan: Tempted, by what?
Yvaine: Immortality. Let’s say it wasn’t my heart. Not me. Just a star you didn’t know.
Tristan: You seriously think I could kill anybody. Even if I could, I mean, everlasting life? I imagine it would be kind of lonely. Well, maybe if you had someone to share it with. Someone you loved. Then it might be different.

Yvaine: (talking to Tristan who turned to a mouse) You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn’t true. I know a lot about love. I’ve seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate… It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves… You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and… What I’m trying to say, Tristan is… I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I’d know it for myself. My heart… It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it’s trying to escape because it doesn’t belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I’d wish for nothing in exchange - no fits. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine.

Tristan: Did you really mean what you said in the caravan?
Yvaine: What I…? But… You were a mouse! You were a mouse… you wanted cheese! You didn’t… I asked you to give me a sign!
Tristan: And risk you being too embarrassed to keep saying to me lovely things?
[kisses her forehead]
Tristan: You want to know what the Captain really whispered to me that day?
[Yvaine nods]
Tristan: He told me that my true love
[Yvaine starts to glow]
Tristan: was right in front of my eyes. And he was right.
[kissing scene]

But then, I also liked this film because of the humor they injected on it. The fight among the brothers was extremely entertaining. So overall, it was a nice film. I’d recommend watching it with someone, it’s a good date movie. Too bad I don’t have a date.
