The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight movie posterSpecial thanks to Joyce for the free special screening tickets. I say that this is the best Batman movie I’ve ever seen. And I’ll have to agree that the late Heath Ledger deserves to win an Oscar for his portrayal of Joker. He practically owned the character, I can’t think of any other actor that can take his place. Some might not like it because of its length (2 hours and 32 minutes), but the story is so brilliant and I think that it was all worth it.

Pisay

post time 13. July 2008 member Tina

Of course, I can’t resist writing about the movie that took place in my own alma mater. This was originally shown at CCP as one of the entries of Cinemalaya 2007. My plane just landed, but I went straight from the airport to CCP to watch it. I can’t help but feel proud that this film is winning international film awards. Oh yeah.

This movie tells us the tale of a group of Pisay students in the 80s, near the time of the EDSA Revolution. This movie was directed by Auraeus Solito, a Pisay alumnus himself (Batch 86). One of the main characters, Liway, is also a Pisay alumna (Shayne Fajutagana, Batch 07). I was surprised myself when I saw my former students in the film.

Diablo III

post time 30. June 2008 member Tina

My brother will be excited with this piece of news. He said that the story is not yet over in Diablo II. I wouldn’t know, I haven’t finished Diablo II. My sorceress is still in the jungle of Act III. Blame it on my workload, I don’t have time for games.

I wonder when will they release the game, though. Blizzard announced Starcraft II a long time ago, and they have yet to display the new Zerg units on their website.

For the meantime, let this video satisfy your bloodlust. Enjoy!

Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: Two Mysteries of the Night of the Full Moon

post time 25. June 2008 member Tina

I just can’t resist writing a review about one of my favorite anime series: Detective Conan. Its original Japanese title is “Meitantei Conan” (名探偵コナン). Although I was not able to watch the series in its entirety (more than 400 episodes and it is still ongoing). I only managed to watch a few episodes, not in any particular order. And I also have a copy of the 11 movies.

I was particularly interested with Episode 345, where Conan confronts the Black Organization. The Japanese title is “Kuro no Soshiki to Makkou Shoubu Mangetsu no Yoru no Nigen Misuterii” (黒の組織と真っ向勝負満月の夜の二元ミステリー). It’s been a while since I’ve watched something that is totally engaging. Usually, I have a general idea on who is the culprit, having watched a lot of episodes of this series. But the plot totally blew me away, I never saw it coming. Amazing.

The Bucket List

post time 22. June 2008 member Tina

This is the first time I saw a movie that was able to change the way I look at life itself. This serves as a reminder that life is short, and you should enjoy every moment of it. In my opinion, the people who are given some sort of warning before they die are lucky, in some sense. They have the chance to reflect on their current status and do the things that really mattered. In Edward and Carter’s case, they did have the time of their lives.

The Golden Compass: Movie Adaptation

post time 19. June 2008 member Tina

The Church need not be worried about this movie. Even though it’s based on Philip Pullman’s book, the scriptwriters toned it down so much so that it would appeal to kids. Honestly, it seems that the scriptwriters are under the influence of the “Magisterium” themselves. They just gathered the exciting parts of the book and used kick-ass animation to pull it off. In the end, the movie was contented in saying that having free will is good, it is not right to suppress it. Talks about the Dust and daemons were only made in passing, almost unimportant.

Meet the Spartans

post time 16. June 2008 member Tina

I wasn’t expecting much, really. From the posters and trailers, I knew that it would be a cheap parody of 300. I just wanted to watch something funny. I wasn’t expecting that my mind would turn to mush afterwards. Haha.

It was slightly better than expected. I was extremely entertained with the way they chose the Spartan babies. After watching 300, my friends and I always thought that one major requirement to become a Spartan is to have nicely sculpted abdominal muscles. Haha.

27 Dresses

I actually wanted to watch this film. I don’t really know why, but when Joyce declared that she wanted to watch that movie, I immediately said yes. The Pisay boys had no idea what it was all about, but they watched it anyway. Besides, it’s not that bad. Not bad at all.

Sweeney Todd

post time 12. June 2008 member Tina

I watched the film because of Johnny Depp. That’s it. I have a slight idea what it’s all about. I didn’t expect it to be bloody. If only I knew, hehe… *evil grin*

Maybe it’s because the others are squeamish, or maybe it’s because I’m being sadistic (to compensate for not being able to express my thoughts as much as I wanted to), but I was laughing while Johnny Depp was killing all those people. I mean come on, it’s obviously fake blood, it even looks like paint. When the judge approached Todd at the end, I can’t wait to see how he would die. Hell, I even said, “Stop the singing and just kill him!” Wahaha.

The Amber Spyglass

post time 9. June 2008 member Tina

The Golden Compass is all about adventure. The Subtle Knife raised a lot of questions. This book is all about the heart. The third installment of Pullman’s trilogy is the longest and the most moving of the three parts.

There are three separate events told in this book. The main story is the journey of Will and Lyra. Lyra was kidnapped by Mrs. Coulter and Will saved her with the help of Iorek. In the process, the subtle knife was broken and he asked Iorek to fix it. Then they journeyed to the world of the dead where no living soul has ever gone before. Joining them in this journey is the angel Balthamos and two Gallivespian spies of Lord Asriel, Tialys and Salmakia. They have to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save Roger and the other dead souls trapped in the world of the dead.
